The LX series Torana came to fruition in 1976 following the successful LH body shape. A
minor facelift was introduced with round headlights, enlarged Holden badge and black
surrounds to side windows. The LX series featured six and eight cylinder options, with the
economical four-cylinder option being branded as the ‘Sunbird’. The sought after ‘A9X’ option
was made available to 5 litre powered SLR500 sedans and SS hatchbacks. Special
equipment included bonnet cowl to increase airflow, rear disk brakes and heavy duty axles
and differential.
This particular example is an LX Torana Hatchback leaving Holden’s Dandenong
manufacturing facility in 1977. It originally started life as a 202 inline 6 powered SL Torana but
has now been transformed with styling cues taken from the desirable SS hatchback. Finished
in tag matching ‘Mint Julep’, colour matched bumpers, bumper overrides, SS grille and rear
decals provide the ‘SS’ hatchback look. The exterior is completed with a set of Outlaw Drag wheels, running a 155/80/R15 up front and a 235/60/R15 in the rear.
The original interior has since been replaced with black vinyl throughout with
black material inserts to the driver, passenger and rear seats. An ‘SS’ steering wheel
compliments the SS styling cues to the exterior while the wood grain dash facia references
the cars original roots. The original ‘yellow needle’ radio is also present.
While the 202 six cylinder is long gone, in it’s place is a fuel injected 304ci V8 mated to an
automatic transmission. While an unconventional choice, the 304ci V8 provides hassle free
driving with the sound and grunt of classic Holden V8s to match.
